Irene at 15: Remembering the Storm—and the Community That Rose to Meet It
Fifteen years later, Tropical Storm Irene remains at the forefront of our minds.
Irene was a seminal event in the history of the Mad River Valley. It exposed our vulnerabilities and changed our community in ways that are still felt today. But it also allowed the MRV to show itself at its very best.
Neighbors showed up for neighbors. Volunteers dug through mud, hauled debris, delivered meals and helped businesses reopen. Deep relationships ensured that help reached the people who needed it most. Together, we began rebuilding—not only roads, bridges and buildings, but confidence in our shared future.
That experience taught us something we should never forget: true resilience begins with community. It comes from knowing one another, trusting one another and being willing to step forward when it matters most.
On Thursday, September 10, we’ll gather on Bridge Street to remember Irene, celebrate the extraordinary community response that followed and begin a year-long conversation about flood and storm resilience in the Mad River Valley.
The afternoon and evening will recreate and reimagine the spirit of the post-Irene Bridge Street block party, with historical photographs, art installations, river exploration, family activities, community organizations, local food and beverages, live music from Phineas Gage and the Mad Mountain Scramblers, and plenty of time to reconnect and share stories.
The evening will conclude along the river with a cold plunge, sauna session and community beach campfire conversation hosted with Drip Culture.
