The Chamber at Its Best: How Community Happens in the Mad River Valley
When people ask what the Chamber does, they’re often thinking about visitor guides, marketing campaigns, networking events, or tourism promotion. Those things matter.
But some of the most important work we do happens quietly, behind the scenes, when we bring people together around a common goal. The Roundup Revival is a perfect example.
When local organizers began discussing bringing this beloved community gathering back to life, they had a great idea, tremendous enthusiasm, and a willingness to do the hard work required to make it happen. What they also needed was a broader network of community support.
This is where the Chamber can often make a difference. Because we work every day with businesses, nonprofits, municipalities, recreation groups, arts organizations, lodging properties, volunteers, and community leaders, we are uniquely positioned to connect people who may not otherwise find themselves sitting at the same table.
Over the past several months, Chamber relationships helped open conversations with key community partners, including 5th Quarter Butcher + Provisions, Sugarbush Resort and other local organizations whose support has been instrumental in making the revival possible. We also reached out to businesses throughout the Valley to encourage sponsorship and financial support. What makes this especially meaningful is that many of the businesses stepping up are not necessarily the same ones that traditionally support community events. New businesses, small businesses, and organizations from different sectors have recognized the value of investing in something that benefits the entire Valley.
That broad-based support matters. A healthy community doesn’t depend on a handful of organizations carrying the load. It thrives when many people contribute in ways both large and small. As conversations continued, another opportunity emerged. What if Roundup Revival could also provide a platform for local nonprofits?
Thanks to the willingness of community members to step forward, local nonprofit organizations will now have opportunities to engage with attendees, share their missions, recruit volunteers, and potentially raise funds. Discussions are even underway about creating weekly raffle opportunities that could provide direct financial support to participating organizations.
What began as a music series is becoming something larger: a gathering place where residents, visitors, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations can come together and celebrate what makes the Mad River Valley special.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen.
Last year’s We Are MRV Community Fair demonstrated the power of bringing organizations together under one roof. Our participation as a pilot community for the Bee App showed how technology can strengthen local connections. The Chamber’s sector councils, committees,, and collaborative initiatives are all built on the same philosophy: our community is strongest when we work together.
None of this happens automatically.
Someone has to make the introductions. Someone has to convene the meetings. Someone has to pick up the phone, send the email, connect the dots, and help people see opportunities beyond their own organizations. And, it can be uploaded to the MRV Chamber-Valley Reporter Community Calendar it envisioned and worked to create. That’s work the Chamber is proud to do.
Success for us isn’t always measured by the number of events we host or the programs we manage directly. Sometimes success looks like a community event finding new life. Sometimes it looks like businesses supporting a cause they hadn’t considered before. Sometimes it looks like nonprofits gaining visibility and resources. Sometimes it looks like relationships forming that will lead to the next collaboration, and the one after that.
The Roundup Revival is a reminder that community doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because people care enough to invest their time, talent, and resources. It happens because organizations choose collaboration over competition. And it happens because there are institutions willing to serve as connectors, conveners, and champions for the greater good.
At its best, that’s what the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce does. And that’s why supporting the Chamber is really an investment in the continued strength, vitality, and connectedness of the entire Mad River Valley.
