Community Socrates Cafe: ” How Does the Passage of Time Affect Our Identity?”

Harwood Union High School Library

January 8 @ 5:30 am

Students from Harwood’s Harkness Leadership class will be hosting a community Socrates Café on Thursday, January 8th from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the HU library. A Socrates Café is an opportunity for dialogue about timeless and timely questions that all human beings deal with. Rather than being a debate or a discussion, a Socrates Café is a dialogue where participants are encouraged to listen to and learn from one another. This form of discourse- and its focus on the search for knowledge- comes from the great philosopher Socrates, who observed that "Wisdom Begins in Wonder." These gatherings are open to all community members, regardless of age, experience, or background. Harwood students who are experienced in leading Socratic Dialogues will facilitate the discussions. Community members of all ages are invited, and refreshments will be provided. The question for the evening discussion is "How Does the Passage of Time Affect Our Identity?" For questions and more information, please contact Adam Sargent at [email protected].

Big Conversations in 10 Short Minutes

Virtual Event

January 15 @ 7:00 pm

Big Conversations in 10 Short Minutes is a virtual meetup in the Mad River Valley. There is no agenda other than to meet and enjoy brief conversations with others in the community. Here's how it works: We'll give you a couple of conversation prompts. One is simple. One leans more toward the philosophical. You'll be paired with someone to have a short, 10-minute conversation about the prompt of your choice. When you're done, you'll be paired with someone else for a new conversation with new prompts. The prompts are simple. The conversations are non-political. We like to think of it as a little pocket of meaning at the end of a long day. Credit to the Scarborough Public Library and associated Maine Libraries for developing the Big Conversations in 10 Short Minutes program.

ZERO CELSIUS

Mad River Valley Arts

January 17 @ 5:30 pm

Mad River Valley Arts welcomes David Goodman and Porter Fox for a public conversation about ‘winter’ at the ZERO CELSIUS Exhibition in Waitsfield, VT — January 17, 2026 | 5:30–7:00 PM David Goodman—award-winning journalist and host of The Vermont Conversation, known for his reporting on climate impacts and natural disasters—will join Porter Fox, acclaimed author of The Last Winter and a leading voice on the future of snow. Together, they will engage in a timely and thought-provoking dialogue focused on “winter.” Their conversation will explore how shifting winter conditions reflect broader climate realities, shape cultural memory, and influence our evolving relationship with the environment. ZERO CELSIUS brings together artists whose work probes the textures, tensions, and transformations of winter. The exhibition features artworks that reflect lived experiences of the cold season—and how those experiences shape, and are reshaped by, human and environmental relationships. Audiences are invited to reflect, listen, and participate in an exchange that feels both urgent and deeply grounded in place. The public is warmly invited to gather, connect, and engage in this prescient dialogue on climate, winter, and change.
Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project at the Big Picture; Featuring Reid Parsons

Big Picture Theater

January 17 @ 7:00 pm

Harwood Alum, Reid Parsons, will return to the Mad River Valley to headline a fundraising concert for the Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project at the Big Picture on Saturday, January 17th. The show will celebrate the legacy of high-quality music education at Harwood by featuring Parsons and including the current HUHS student band, the Glam Cowboys, as the opening act. The show is part of a concert series presented throughout the Harwood district to support HARP, the Harwood Auditorium Revitalization Project. HARP was created to raise funds for key improvements that will benefit students, educators, and the broader community. The HARP seeks to transform an aging facility into a vibrant, safe, and fully equipped space that reflects the talent and dedication of our students and community. Despite years of excellence in our Music and Theater programs, the theater itself has not been substantially renovated since 1997 and no longer meets the needs of modern performances. Harwood Theater Director Scott Weigand felt Parsons was a perfect choice to perform since she reflects the longstanding high caliber of the HUHS Music Department. A 2011 Harwood alum, Parsons was very involved in the Harwood Music department and was the lead in “Annie Get Your Gun” in 2009, the first Harwood show Weigand directed. Parsons is now a Burlington-based singer-songwriter whose music blends soul, folk, blues, and jazz-infused Americana into something both grounded and expansive. Her debut full-length album, “Back to Back”, released in the spring of 2025, showcases her signature style: expressive vocals, layered arrangements, and songs that are as emotionally resonant as they are sonically rich. Written, arranged, and produced by Parsons herself, the record moves confidently between intimate ballads and full-band tracks with a deep sense of groove and feeling. Opening the show for Parsons will be the Glam Cowboys, Harwood’s next generation of talent, made up of active members of the Harwood Music and Theater Departments. The Glam Cowboys are an indie-pop/rock band featuring Eireann McDonough on lead vocals, Tarin Askew on guitar and vocals, Cora Potts on drums, Cali Neville on bass, and Eliza Whitehair on keys. Known for their coordinated attire and live energy, they perform a diverse collection of original music. They have performed at venues such as Zen Barn, Higher Ground, Firefolk Arts, and recently in MRVTV’s In-Studio Live Music Series. STAND UP FOR SAFETY WORKSHOPS

MRV Chamber Welcome Center

January 22 @ 10:00 am

In the Mad River Valley, we believe that everyone — whether they live here, work here, or visit — deserves to feel safe. To support that vision the chamber's is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves, their co-workers, or their guests. • Recognize signs of harm, harassment, or exploitation
  • Respond appropriately and safely when concerns arise
  • Connect individuals in need with the right support services
The workshops are approachable, hands-on, and rooted in real-world hospitality settings — from restaurants and inns to shops and recreation businesses. While the curriculum is still being finalized, the goal is clear: to ensure the Mad River Valley remains a safe and welcoming place for all. The workshops are organized and facilitated by Anna Nassset Consulting. Upcoming Workshops will all take place at the MRV Chamber Welcome Center

  • Back in October 22  GBV Bystander Training was offered We learned the basics of gender-based violence prevention, including the 4D’s of bystander intervention, and how to empower yourself and others to make a difference.
A Community Commitment “Hospitality is the backbone of the Mad River Valley’s economy and culture,” said Eric Friedman, Executive Director of the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce. “By giving our front-line staff the tools and confidence to recognize and respond to difficult situations, we’re not just protecting individuals — we’re strengthening the fabric of our community and ensuring the Valley remains a safe, welcoming place for everyone.” About Stand Up for Safety A collaboration between local businesses, resorts, and organizations committed to standing up to gender-based violence and fostering a culture of care in the Mad River Valley. Bringing together sculpture, installation, sound, photography, and digital media, ZERO CELSIUS examines winter as material, concept, and metaphor: crystalline, fleeting, and ecologically vital. The exhibition invites visitors to consider the fragility of snow in a changing world, to reconnect with winter’s wonder and silence, and to share their own stories and memories of a season both timeless and increasingly imperiled.

Kandahar Mountain Race

January 31 @ 7:30 am

A race of a bygone era, the Kandahar channels the spirit of full mountain races that were once commonplace on the racing circuit and at MRG. The last version held in the 1980s began on Creamery, descended onto Moody’s, before taking on (Grand) Canyon. At the bottom of Canyon, racers went straight across Easy Way, over the cliff on One Way, and over S-Turn Cliff onto Lower Periwinkle and finished by the base of the Double. Whew! Our modern version is a bit more modest but will still reward those who can ski gates as well as terrain on the trail. The trail combination and exact set to get from the start to the finish are dependent on snow depth and conditions. Please see the race flyer (when available) for additional course details.

The MRG Racing Triple Crown combines three celebrated legacy events and crowns an overall category champions!

    1. The storied Kandahar is MRG’s modern version of a full mountain ski race. It rewards those who can ski gates as well as terrain and conditions on the trail.
    2. The Dash For Cash is a new event that will pit racers head to head on a dual panel course with pro jump.
    3. The Rockefeller Challenge is a test of fearlessness and speed where competitors tuck straight downhill and glide uphill to find the skier who goes the furthest.

Combine and register for all three events and save!

A valid lift ticket or season pass is required. Lift ticket not included in the entry fee.

Ages 10 & up as of 1/1/25. You must complete a registration for each family member who will be racing. Please log in below (if you are already in MRG’s system) or create a new account for each racer.

February 21 @ 10:30 am

The Stark Mountain Foundation will be sponsoring the 8th Annual StorySki on Saturday, February 21, 2026, from 10:30 to 2:30. The StorySki is based on the idea of the StoryWalk, a project that originated in Montpelier at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library and has spread throughout the world. Laminated pages from a children’s book are installed along an outdoor path. As you stroll down the trail, you’re directed to the next page in the story. It was created as a way for children to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.

Pre-registration for the event is strongly encouraged. The event is free, but everyone will need a lift ticket to participate.

The Stark Mountain Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization based in Waitsfield, VT The mission of the Stark Mountain Foundation is to preserve and protect the environment and ecosystem of General Stark Mountain, including its recreational access and historic value, and to support programs that promote and sustain that environment for the enjoyment of present and future generations.

STAND UP FOR SAFETY WORKSHOPS

MRV Chamber Welcome Center

April 7 @ 10:00 am

In the Mad River Valley, we believe that everyone — whether they live here, work here, or visit — deserves to feel safe. To support that vision the chamber's is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves, their co-workers, or their guests. These interactive sessions will equip front-line staff with practical tools to:
  • January 22 - 10-11 am: Understanding DV, HT, and Stalking Explore how to identify and respond to domestic violence, human trafficking, and stalking in both customers and co-workers, and learn about available local and national resources.
  • April 7- 10-11 am: Sexual Assault Awareness Month Learn to recognize early warning signs of sexual assault, how to respond to disclosures, and how to connect survivors with resources and support.
  • August 5 - 10-11 am: Workplace Culture Discover how to build a supportive workplace culture where all employees feel safe and valued, through stories, exercises, and practical leadership strategies.
For more information about the workshops, or to learn how your business can get involved, please contact [email protected] and/or visit www.madrivervalley.com/stand-up-for-safety

STAND UP FOR SAFETY WORKSHOPS

MRV Chamber Welcome Center

August 5 @ 10:00 am

In the Mad River Valley, we believe that everyone — whether they live here, work here, or visit — deserves to feel safe. To support that vision the chamber's is launching a new series of Stand Up for Safety workshops designed to help hospitality workers recognize and respond to situations that may threaten the safety or well-being of themselves, their co-workers, or their guests. These interactive sessions will equip front-line staff with practical tools to:
For more information about the workshops, or to learn how your business can get involved, please contact [email protected] and/or visit www.madrivervalley.com/stand-up-for-safety
