Farm to Family

Farm to Family is a program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Crop Cash is a double-value coupon program that promotes the purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs at farmers markets that accept 3SquaresVT/SNAP benefits. In essence, Crop Cash is an incentive dollar that is earned for 3SquaresVT/SNAP purchases for use on the future purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and starts at the market. Coupons are marked specifically to each Market and available year round. NOFA-VT manages this program.

Mow some grass, earn your pass! Mow crew is the best way to get an intimate look at all of the nooks and crannies of Stark Mountain, burn some calories and make new ski buddies. At the end of the 10 days of work you’ll have earned some cash for your pocket and a full season’s pass for the upcoming winter.

A little run down on how we mow our trails… We use hand scythes to cut the grass, ferns and shrubs on the steepest slopes here at Mad River Glen. Most of the beginner and intermediate terrain is mowed with a tractor, mow crew steps in to finish off the areas the tractor can’t go. We mow and move in a line shoulder-to-shoulder hiking up the trails as we go. It can be tough work but the camaraderie makes it so much fun! Truly, it is rewarding and at the end of the 10 days, you’ll have a full season ski pass and some cash in your pocket. Not only that but you will likely have learned something about the terrain you didn’t already know and you’ll have gained a couple of new ski buddies.

The day begins at 7:00 am and we mow until about 3:00 pm with many short breaks in between. A backpack with a hydration pack is highly recommended and you should also pack yourself enough food to get you through the day. There will be water stations along the route to refill your containers and likely a ride down on the chairlift at the end of the day to ease the knees. Most people wear pants and long sleeves to fend off bugs and protect them from the sun but a few hardy folks go shorts and tees, everyone wears hiking boots – no exceptions. We will provide the scythe, a pair of work gloves, a sharpening stone/tools and water.

STARK’S PUB WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH FOR SIPTEMBERFEST. 

Back in 2008, three folks who really like beer, really like festivals and really like Mad River Glen, decided we wanted to bring the fun of a beer fest back to the Valley and that the only way it was going to happen was if we pulled up our bootstraps and did it ourselves!

Although Siptemberfest has grown over the years it is still the greatest little beer festival in the state of Vermont. There are still only around 24 brewers and roughly 800 tickets for sale, making it the Best Little Beer Fest in Vermont. For more information check out the official SIPtemberfest website.

Stark Mountain Foundation is thrilled to welcome back Vermont Master Naturalist Gene O. Desideraggio for our seasonal series of free, family-friendly guided hikes. More than just a walk in the woods—it’s an invitation to step into the hidden world of the Green Mountains. This season’s hikes will take place: 

May 16th: 2pm-4pm – Snowshoe Trail (~2 hours)

June 20th: 5-7:30pm – Solstice Hike to the Kent Thomas Nature Center. Join us as we explore the flora and fauna that thrives in the diverse landscape of Mad River Glen, ranging from the pollinators of common flowers along the ski trails to ephemeral plants of the moist forest. Expect to learn about wildlife and how you can contribute your day-to-day natural observations to benefit conservation. Medium/ High intensity (>800ft elevation gain) 

July 18th: 2pm-3:30pm – Waterfall Hike (~1.5 hours)

August 15th: 2pm-4pm – up the Snowshoe Trail & down the 19th hole (~2 hours)

September 19th: 2pm-4pm – Snowshoe Trail (~2 hours)

October 3rd (Green and Gold Weekend): 1p-4pm (~3hrs) High Intensity (take lift up and hike down the mountain)

October 17th: Kent Thomas Nature Center – 2pm-5pm  (~2.5-3hrs)

Hikes are open to ages 5+ (a supervising adult must accompany children), pre-registration is required to attend, and registration is limited. Hikes will meet at the flagpole in front of the Mad River Glen Basebox.

Volunteer Mountain Work Days will once again utilize pre-registration and limit the total group size. Space is extremely limited, don’t wait, register online!

Any minors that register must be at least 12 years of age, accompanied by their legal guardian/parent throughout the day, no dogs or swinging tools (hatchet, axe, maul) are allowed.

General information:  The purpose of Volunteer Mountain Work Days is the maintenance of MRG’s legendary tree skiing and regeneration zones in our mountain forest. This involves cutting lines as well as setting aside areas for new trees to grow. Everything is done with hand tools. Work days are organized and led by Lars Bruns in consultation with ski area management. Volunteer Mountain Work Days are a great chance to get out on the mountain, care for your favorite terrain, and learn about how northeastern mountain forests grow. It is hard work, but also fun and satisfying to see a ski line take shape, and how trees will grow in response to care.

We welcome both experienced veterans and newcomers to the mountain work days. Each person who works a full day receives a complimentary day pass voucher for each day she or he works.

Logistics

• Report at 9:00 am at the Cricket Club picnic table.  We’re back down at 3:30 – 4:00 pm.
• Most of the time we hike from the base, so be physically fit and prepared to hike the mountain top to bottom.
• Most days are held rain or shine – Working in the rain is fun!
• Bring work gloves, hiking boots, drinks & lunch.
• Loppers are the most useful tool to bring. Make sure they are in good working order.
• Work days navigate our gnarly terrain; no dogs or kids under 12 please. Minors under the age of 18 must register and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The incidence of Lyme Disease is increasing rapidly in Vermont. This disease is debilitating and hard to get rid of. More Info on how to protect yourself while thrashing around the woods of Stark Mountain.

The following tools are not allowed: All power tools such as chain saws, and swinging tools such as hatchets or axes.

Outfitting for Rain Events:

• Outer layer – The primary function is to hold in heat, as well as keep water out for as long as possible.
  • Goretex shell or other rainwear
  • Waterproof pant shell – old ski pants work well
  • Waterproof gaiters (Goretex)
  • Waterproof boots beforehand
  • Brimmed synthetic hat and fleece hat
  • If the weather is warm, then staying warm is not a problem. Fast-drying shorts, gaiters, and a rain shell may be sufficient.
• Inner layers – No cotton – must keep one warm when wet.
  • Wool or synthetic shirt and long underwear
  • Fleece
  • Wool socks
  • Thin windbreaker underneath the shell to hold even more heat in
• Other Tips
  • Put dry (synthetic) clothing in a garbage bag
  • Bring a second synthetic inner layer shirt (in the garbage bag) to change into at lunch
  • Put first aid kit in a waterproof bag
  • A thermos of hot tea or soup. Caffeine constricts capillaries and should be avoided
  • Bring backup gloves. Cold hands will not warm up in wet gloves

Farm to Family is a program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These coupons are in denominations of $6.00 and helps individuals buy fresh fruits and vegetables, locally grown from Vermont farms and at Farmers Markets. Look for vendors at our Market with the Farm to Family Program sign to accept your coupons.

Crop Cash

Crop Cash is a double-value coupon program that promotes the purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs at farmers markets that accept 3SquaresVT/SNAP benefits. In essence, Crop Cash is an incentive dollar that is earned for 3SquaresVT/SNAP purchases for use on the future purchase of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and starts at the market. Coupons are marked specifically to each Market and available year round. NOFA-VT manages this program.

Join Stark Mountain Foundation for a family-friendly presentation “Owls and Their Calls” by the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences. The presentation will take place at 11 am on Saturday, October 3rd on Green & Gold Weekend, on the third floor of the Basebox at Mad River Glen. 

Contrary to popular belief, not all owls hoot—some screech, whistle, or bark. We’ll meet live owls and learn about the various sounds they make in our local forests. This first-hand encounter allows us to understand the defining characteristics and adaptations for life as a nocturnal predator on the wing. Touchable artifacts and hands-on materials round out this special experience.

Stark Mountain Foundation is thrilled to welcome back Vermont Master Naturalist Gene O. Desideraggio for our seasonal series of free, family-friendly guided hikes. More than just a walk in the woods—it’s an invitation to step into the hidden world of the Green Mountains. This season’s hikes will take place: 

May 16th: 2pm-4pm – Snowshoe Trail (~2 hours)

June 20th: 5-7:30pm – Solstice Hike to the Kent Thomas Nature Center. Join us as we explore the flora and fauna that thrives in the diverse landscape of Mad River Glen, ranging from the pollinators of common flowers along the ski trails to ephemeral plants of the moist forest. Expect to learn about wildlife and how you can contribute your day-to-day natural observations to benefit conservation. Medium/ High intensity (>800ft elevation gain) 

July 18th: 2pm-3:30pm – Waterfall Hike (~1.5 hours)

August 15th: 2pm-4pm – up the Snowshoe Trail & down the 19th hole (~2 hours)

September 19th: 2pm-4pm – Snowshoe Trail (~2 hours)

October 3rd (Green and Gold Weekend): 1p-4pm (~3hrs) High Intensity (take lift up and hike down the mountain)

October 17th: Kent Thomas Nature Center – 2pm-5pm  (~2.5-3hrs)

Hikes are open to ages 5+ (a supervising adult must accompany children), pre-registration is required to attend, and registration is limited. Hikes will meet at the flagpole in front of the Mad River Glen Basebox.

Any minors that register must be at least 12 years of age, accompanied by their legal guardian/parent throughout the day, no dogs or swinging tools (hatchet, axe, maul) are allowed.

General information:  The purpose of Volunteer Mountain Work Days is the maintenance of MRG’s legendary tree skiing and regeneration zones in our mountain forest. This involves cutting lines as well as setting aside areas for new trees to grow. Everything is done with hand tools. Work days are organized and led by Lars Bruns in consultation with ski area management. Volunteer Mountain Work Days are a great chance to get out on the mountain, care for your favorite terrain, and learn about how northeastern mountain forests grow. It is hard work, but also fun and satisfying to see a ski line take shape, and how trees will grow in response to care.

We welcome both experienced veterans and newcomers to the mountain work days. Each person who works a full day receives a complimentary day pass voucher for each day she or he works.

Logistics

• Report at 9:00 am at the Cricket Club picnic table.  We’re back down at 3:30 – 4:00 pm.
• Most of the time we hike from the base, so be physically fit and prepared to hike the mountain top to bottom.
• Most days are held rain or shine – Working in the rain is fun!
• Bring work gloves, hiking boots, drinks & lunch.
• Loppers are the most useful tool to bring. Make sure they are in good working order.
• Work days navigate our gnarly terrain; no dogs or kids under 12 please. Minors under the age of 18 must register and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The incidence of Lyme Disease is increasing rapidly in Vermont. This disease is debilitating and hard to get rid of. More Info on how to protect yourself while thrashing around the woods of Stark Mountain.

The following tools are not allowed: All power tools such as chain saws, and swinging tools such as hatchets or axes.

Outfitting for Rain Events:

• Outer layer – The primary function is to hold in heat, as well as keep water out for as long as possible.
  • Goretex shell or other rainwear
  • Waterproof pant shell – old ski pants work well
  • Waterproof gaiters (Goretex)
  • Waterproof boots beforehand
  • Brimmed synthetic hat and fleece hat
  • If the weather is warm, then staying warm is not a problem. Fast-drying shorts, gaiters, and a rain shell may be sufficient.
• Inner layers – No cotton – must keep one warm when wet.
  • Wool or synthetic shirt and long underwear
  • Fleece
  • Wool socks
  • Thin windbreaker underneath the shell to hold even more heat in
• Other Tips
  • Put dry (synthetic) clothing in a garbage bag
  • Bring a second synthetic inner layer shirt (in the garbage bag) to change into at lunch
  • Put first aid kit in a waterproof bag
  • A thermos of hot tea or soup. Caffeine constricts capillaries and should be avoided
  • Bring backup gloves. Cold hands will not warm up in wet gloves

The Mad River Valley Backcountry Coalition (MRVBC) has partnered again with Kel Rossiter of Adventure Spirit to offer a 1-day workshop on backcountry fundamentals. The BC Primer will be an all-day workshop held at the Mad River Glen @ the Cricket Club and on the mountain on Saturday, November 7th. The course topics will help those who are newer to backcountry skiing/riding feel more comfortable going out into the deep woods of our region in search of untracked snow. More experienced skiers/riders will gain useful insights, information, tools, and techniques for exploring mountains further afield.  And all will certainly enjoy meeting and connecting with other BC enthusiasts in our community!

With the election behind us and the 2027 legislative session approaching, the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce will host the Vermont Chamber of Commerce and Vermont Futures Project for a timely conversation about the issues facing Vermont businesses.

The discussion will bring together what the data tells us, what local businesses are experiencing and what policymakers will be considering in Montpelier.

Topics will include:

• Analysis of the election results and incoming Legislature
• Findings from the Vermont Business Climate Survey
• Key policy opportunities and challenges expected during the 2027 session
• Practical ways businesses can engage in the policymaking process

Most importantly, this will be an opportunity for members of the Mad River Valley business community to share what they are seeing and experiencing. The program will include plenty of time for candid discussion, questions and conversation, along with a little time to mingle.
