Camel’s Hump Trail is a top day hike in the Green Mountain National Forest, boasting the third-highest peak in the state. The summit treats you to stunning views in all directions, including a glimpse of Killington Peak. To access the trailhead, head to Camel’s Hump Road, where you’ll find a small parking area for visitors. For a smoother experience, arrive early in the warmer months and on weekends, as the road isn’t suitable for parking. For this out-and-back route, start on the Monroe Trail, which is steep but levels off occasionally. You’ll meet the Dean Trail intersection, where you can turn left onto Dean Trail and then take the Long Trail to the summit, or continue straight on the Monroe Trail. If you choose the latter, you will end at the hut clearing, where it becomes the Long Trail. A short climb leads to the summit. The final stretch of the hike can be very steep and narrow, so if you’re afraid of heights, this may not be the best fit for you. However, the view from the summit is worth the effort- you’ll enjoy a 360-degree panorama of nearly every mountain range in the area. Keep an eye out for Mount Mansfield to the north and Mount Washington to the east. After taking in the view, head back down on the Long Trail, south to the Monroe Trail. During the winter months, the closest parking lot isn’t always open, so expect to park a bit further from the starting point.
