Light Up the MRV for Great Causes

The holiday season in the Mad River Valley has its own unmistakable glow — a warmth created not just by lights, but by community. As always, the MRV Chamber works to light up the MRV for the holidays. We’re excited to continue two beloved traditions that bring beauty, remembrance, and purpose to our community: the Star Kit Program and the Memory Tree. Both projects reflect what makes the MRV so special: community spirit, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to honoring those we cherish.

⭐ The Star Kit Program: A Valley Tradition That Shines with Meaning

For nearly two decades, the hand-crafted stars that adorn homes, barns, and businesses have become one of the most iconic sights in the MRV. What began as a simple idea among Waitsfield Village business owners — sapling-wood stars assembled as a whimsical nod to the season — quickly became a grassroots phenomenon.

After the tragic loss of five local students in 2016, the stars grew even more meaningful, often appearing in groups of five as a tribute. In response, five years ago the MRV Chamber began the Star Kit initiative, turning this cherished symbol into a way to support the foundations created in the kids’ memories.

Today, students, local businesses, citizens, and the Chamber come together each year to build and sell Star Kits, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the five organizations honoring Cyrus, Janie, Eli, Mary, and Liam. Each Star Kit includes everything needed to build a durable 3′ or 6′ star — pre-drilled wooden cross sticks, hardware, lights, and even a wicked cool MRV sticker. Kits are purchased online and picked up at the Chamber office.

The stars brighten our homes — and our hearts — each winter.

Mad River Valley Memory Tree🎄 The Memory Tree: Honoring Loved Ones, Illuminating the Valley

Another cherished tradition that lights up the MRV is the Memory Tree, offering community members a way to honor someone special or commemorate an event close to their heart.

Originally started by the Mad River Valley Lions Club in the 1970s, the Memory Tree was revived in 2013 by Joan Wilson, John Gallagher, and Nancy and Jess Mobley.  Each year, a different local cause benefits — and this year, all funds raised support the stewardMRV program, helping care for our valley’s beloved outdoor access points.

Dedications are just $5 each or 5 for $20, and the Winthrop H. Smith Jr. Family Foundation generously matches all donations. At the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, the dedications are read aloud — a heartfelt moment of remembrance and community connection.
