SUMMARY:Cookbook & Short Story Club
DESCRIPTION:In October\, cookbook club celebrates Moroccan cooking with recipes from “Madaq: Simple and Delicious Recipes with the Flavors of Morocco” by Nargisse Benkabbou. This book contains both traditional and non-traditional recipes full of Moroccan flavor – no tagine pot needed! The focus is on simple recipes with familiar ingredients and cooking techniques\, many quick enough to prepare for a weeknight dinner. The cookbook is on display at the Warren Library so participants may browse and choose a recipe to prepare for a potluck dinner. \nWe’ll also give out copies of two short stories by Moroccan-American author Laila Lalami to read and discuss over dinner. However\, there is no pressure to finish — or even start — the reading.

SUMMARY:1st Ever MRV - Discover Waterbury Combined Chamber Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges\nThey said it would never happen—but the times\, they are a-changin’! At a time when there seems to be division everywhere we turn\, we are working to build as many bridges as possible. That includes an increasingly close partnership with our good neighbors at Discover Waterbury. \nOur two communities share more than a town line. We are connected by Route 100\, a regional economy and a common interest in encouraging visitors to experience everything this remarkable part of Vermont has to offer. By working together\, we can promote the region more effectively\, strengthen relationships among our businesses and create new opportunities for collaboration. \nTo celebrate that growing partnership\, the Mad River Valley Chamber and Discover Waterbury are joining forces for a very special social gathering. And what better place to meet than the magnificent Moose Meadow Lodge & Treehouse—located on the “neutral ground” of Duxbury\, Vermont\, affectionately known as De-Lux-Bury! \nOur hosts\, Willie and Greg\, will welcome us to their beautiful inn and grounds and serve a selection of delicious Filipino-inspired appetizers. If you have never visited Moose Meadow Lodge\, toured its famous treehouse or attended one of its summer concerts\, you are in for an absolute treat—especially with autumn arriving in the mountains. \nHarwood Union High School music students Eireann and Tarin will add to the evening with live vocals and acoustic guitar. The Duxbury Historical Society will join us as our featured nonprofit partner\, helping us celebrate the history and community connecting the Mad River Valley and Waterbury. \nBoth organizations are working to make this a memorable gathering\, so keep an eye out for additional details. We hope businesses and community members from throughout the region will join us\, make some new connections and help us continue building bridges. \nOne important example of the MRV–Discover Waterbury partnership is our shared effort to attract international travelers to Vermont’s Route 100 corridor. Learn more about that work and how the Mad River Valley is stepping into the international marketplace.

SUMMARY:Return to Center - A Therapeutic Yoga & Somatic Movement Practice
DESCRIPTION:Life has a way of pulling us in many directions. Return to Center is an invitation to slow down\, reconnect with yourself\, and remember the wisdom that already lives within you.\nInspired by therapeutic yoga and somatic movement\, this class is designed for anyone seeking greater balance\, resilience\, and ease—no prior experience is necessary. Through mindful movement\, breath\, and guided awareness\, you’ll build strength\, stability\, and confidence while learning to listen more deeply to your body’s signals.\nRather than striving to do the “perfect” pose\, you’ll be encouraged to explore what feels supportive and sustainable for you. Each practice offers choices and adaptations\, empowering you to trust yourself and discover the path that best meets your needs in the present moment.\nOver the course of the season\, you’ll cultivate:\nA deeper sense of self-trust and inner resilience.\nGreater balance\, strength\, and embodied confidence.\nPractical tools to regulate stress and reconnect with yourself.\nIncreased awareness of your body’s wisdom and your own inner guidance.\nA renewed sense of possibility\, agency\, and clarity as you move through life’s challenges.\nThis is more than a yoga class: it’s a space to explore what becomes possible when you reconnect with your center and recognize that you are the leader and guide of your own life.\nCome as you are. Leave feeling more grounded\, capable\, and connected to the person you are becoming.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Mountain Work Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Mountain Work Days will once again utilize pre-registration and limit the total group size. Space is extremely limited\, don’t wait\, register online! \nAny minors that register must be at least 12 years of age\, accompanied by their legal guardian/parent throughout the day\, no dogs or swinging tools (hatchet\, axe\, maul) are allowed. \nGeneral information:  The purpose of Volunteer Mountain Work Days is the maintenance of MRG’s legendary tree skiing and regeneration zones in our mountain forest. This involves cutting lines as well as setting aside areas for new trees to grow. Everything is done with hand tools. Work days are organized and led by Lars Bruns in consultation with ski area management. Volunteer Mountain Work Days are a great chance to get out on the mountain\, care for your favorite terrain\, and learn about how northeastern mountain forests grow. It is hard work\, but also fun and satisfying to see a ski line take shape\, and how trees will grow in response to care. \nWe welcome both experienced veterans and newcomers to the mountain work days. Each person who works a full day receives a complimentary day pass voucher for each day she or he works. \nSummer/Fall 2026 Schedule \n\nAugust 8th\nSeptember 26th\nOctober 10th\nOctober 24th\n\n  \nLogistics \n\nReport at 9:00 am at the Cricket Club picnic table.  We’re back down at 3:30 – 4:00 pm.\nMost of the time we hike from the base\, so be physically fit and prepared to hike the mountain top to bottom.\nMost days are held rain or shine – Working in the rain is fun!\nBring work gloves\, hiking boots\, drinks & lunch.\nLoppers are the most useful tool to bring. Make sure they are in good working order.\nWork days navigate our gnarly terrain; no dogs or kids under 12 please. Minors under the age of 18 must register and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nThe incidence of Lyme Disease is increasing rapidly in Vermont. This disease is debilitating and hard to get rid of. More Info on how to protect yourself while thrashing around the woods of Stark Mountain. \nThe following tools are not allowed: All power tools such as chain saws\, and swinging tools such as hatchets or axes. \nOutfitting for Rain Events: \n\nOuter layer – The primary function is to hold in heat\, as well as keep water out for as long as possible.\n\nGoretex shell or other rainwear\nWaterproof pant shell – old ski pants work well\nWaterproof gaiters (Goretex)\nWaterproof boots beforehand\nBrimmed synthetic hat and fleece hat\nIf the weather is warm\, then staying warm is not a problem. Fast-drying shorts\, gaiters\, and a rain shell may be sufficient.\n\n\nInner layers – No cotton – must keep one warm when wet.\n\nWool or synthetic shirt and long underwear\nFleece\nWool socks\nThin windbreaker underneath the shell to hold even more heat in\n\n\nOther Tips\n\nPut dry (synthetic) clothing in a garbage bag\nBring a second synthetic inner layer shirt (in the garbage bag) to change into at lunch\nPut first aid kit in a waterproof bag\nA thermos of hot tea or soup. Caffeine constricts capillaries and should be avoided\nBring backup gloves. Cold hands will not warm up in wet gloves

SUMMARY:Red Cross Blood Drive at Cabot Creamery
DESCRIPTION:Schedule a Time to Give Today!\n\nIn addition to a bar of fabulous Cabot Creamery cheese the Red Cross is offering donors a $20 Amazon Gift Card by email for giving blood in August.   \nThe American Red Cross has an urgent need for donors and is counting on people to act now and book a time to give blood or platelets. Donors of all blood types and those giving platelets are needed to keep a strong supply of lifesaving blood products on hospital shelves into the summer. \nAs summer heat ramps up\, so do people’s plans\, which could lead to postponed appointments or less opportunities to give ─ an especially troubling scenario at a time where the Red Cross has experienced an alarming drop in scheduled donations in recent weeks. In addition to many end-of-school year activities\, travel and school breaks\, June 1 marked the beginning of Atlantic hurricane season ─ a reminder that severe weather can also quickly disrupt the ability to donate in affected areas and potentially delay or cancel blood drives. \nPower Red: A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Neg\, B Neg\, or O blood. \n\n\nBlood: The most common type of donation\, during which approximately a pint of ‘whole blood’ is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour.\n\nLearn More About Different Types of Donations

SUMMARY:Potions & Perfume: A Witchy Fragrance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Perfume\, but make it witchy. Blend your own custom fragrance in our greenhouse with Bloom Lab Perfumerie while we share the folklore behind the herbs\, flowers\, and resins once used in spells and potions. \nWe’ll explore fragrance notes and learn how different aromas come together to create a balanced blend. Along the way\, we’ll share the lore and legends behind the botanicals themselves: the herbs tucked under pillows to keep nightmares away\, the blooms said to stir love\, the resins burned for protection\, and the roots whispered about in old apothecary tales. Then you’ll experiment with a variety of scents and blend your own custom perfume to take home. Part potion\, part perfume\, entirely yours. \nNo experience necessary. Curiosity (and a touch of mischief) encouraged. \nAll aromatic and carrier ingredients are 100% natural and contain 0% synthetic ingredients. \nYour ticket includes the workshop experience and everything you need to create your own custom perfume.
