SUMMARY:Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb
DESCRIPTION:The Allen Clark Memorial Hill Climb — the annual grunt-fest that has fast become a rite of cycling passage in the Mad River Valley — is a grueling time trial that rises 1\,600 vertical feet in 6.2 miles\, from the intersection of Routes 100 and 17 to the top of Appalachian Gap. \nThe event is named in honor of long-time Mad River Valley resident\, Allen Clark. An avid cyclist who took up biking late in life\, he rode 2\,500-3\,000 annually in Vermont. Allen especially loved the challenge of the Appalachian Gap. This event is a tribute to Allen’s life and a fundraiser for Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports\, an organization that meant a great deal to him. \nThe cost to register is $50 for adults and $30 for kids.\nBikers are encouraged to pre-register in advance of the event by clicking here \nRace-day registration will take place from 8:30-9:30AM in front of Stark Mountain Bike Works. A $10 surcharge per entry will be added to all day-of registrations. Entry includes automatic participation in a raffle for lots of great shwag! \nFor more information\, call 802-793-0109 \nBest Times — Medals awarded to the top three men and women in age categories. Current records: Phil Mason — 23:11.43\, Marti Shea — 26:47.30. \nCombined Events — Trophies will be awarded to the man and woman with the best combined times for the bike race and Saturday’s Stark Mountain Hill Climb footrace. \nDetails:\nDate – Sunday October 4\, 2026\nStart — 10 AM\, Stark Mountain Bike Works\, Route 100 & Route 17\, Waitsfield\, VT\nFinish — Top of Appalachian Gap \n\nLength: 6.2 miles\nVertical climb: 1\,600 feet\nRace format: Time trial\, 30-second intervals\n8 age categories\, from 15 and under to 70 and over.\nRegistration fees: Adults – $50\, Kids – $30\, $10 surcharge per entry for race day registration.\n\nThe Course\nThe time trial course begins at Stark Mountain Bike Works at the corner of Routes 17 and 100 and rises 1600 vertical feet over 6.2 miles to finish at the intersection of the Long Trail at the summit of the Appalachian Gap. \n \nThe road\, originally named the McCullough Turnpike when built in the 1950s\, is currently the highest paved road in Vermont kept open year-round\, topping out at 2\,356 feet. The road wasn’t constructed using the high-tech survey methods available today; instead\, the bed was laid out following the natural contours of the terrain. With an average pitch of roughly 10 percent over the last 2½ miles\, the climb is steeper (if shorter) than most climbs in the Tour de France. But steepness alone isn’t everything. The numerous changes in pitch and direction are really what make the App Gap climb a challenging and exhilarating ride\, both physically and mentally. \nWho Can Participate?\nCyclists and Unicyclists of all ages and abilities with any type of bicycle are invited to tackle the challenge of racing to the top of the Appalachian Gap. In keeping with the spirit of its namesake\, the late Allen Clark\, the Hill Climb is a celebration of cycling as a sport for people of all ages and physical abilities\, with any type of bicycle. Clark was a Mad River Valley cycling enthusiast and a regular bike-shop customer who didn’t take up the sport until he was in his sixties. He went on to log between 2\,000 and 3\,500 miles a year\, well into his 70s\, riding in all weather and in every month of the year. His favorite bike was a Bianchi hybrid\, fully rigged with racks and a huge storage trunk. The bike weighed more than 40 pounds — more than twice the weight of a typical racing bike. \nThe Ap Gap climb was one of Clark’s favorite rides\, as it is for almost every cyclist in the Mad River Valley. The climb can be difficult and even downright painful\, but getting to the top is always extraordinarily rewarding. Regardless of what level rider you might be\, riding the Gap is the ultimate fitness reality check. That’s why local riders come back to the Gap again and again\, in a kind of love/hate relationship. \nCategories\nPrizes will be awarded for both men and women\, 15 years and over. Junior riders\, under age 15\, will finish at Mad River Glen. \n\nUnder 15\n15-19\n20+\n40+\n50+\n60+\n70+\nAdaptive\nTandem\nUnicyclists\n\nVolunteers\nThe Allen Clark Hill Climb relies on volunteers to make this event happen. Space is extremely limited\, don’t wait\, register online! \nAny minors that register must be at least 12 years of age\, accompanied by their legal guardian/parent throughout the day\, no dogs or swinging tools (hatchet\, axe\, maul) are allowed. \nGeneral information:  The purpose of Volunteer Mountain Work Days is the maintenance of MRG’s legendary tree skiing and regeneration zones in our mountain forest. This involves cutting lines as well as setting aside areas for new trees to grow. Everything is done with hand tools. Work days are organized and led by Lars Bruns in consultation with ski area management. Volunteer Mountain Work Days are a great chance to get out on the mountain\, care for your favorite terrain\, and learn about how northeastern mountain forests grow. It is hard work\, but also fun and satisfying to see a ski line take shape\, and how trees will grow in response to care. \nWe welcome both experienced veterans and newcomers to the mountain work days. Each person who works a full day receives a complimentary day pass voucher for each day she or he works. \nSummer/Fall 2026 Schedule \n\nAugust 8th\nSeptember 26th\nOctober 10th\nOctober 24th\n\n  \nLogistics \n\nReport at 9:00 am at the Cricket Club picnic table.  We’re back down at 3:30 – 4:00 pm.\nMost of the time we hike from the base\, so be physically fit and prepared to hike the mountain top to bottom.\nMost days are held rain or shine – Working in the rain is fun!\nBring work gloves\, hiking boots\, drinks & lunch.\nLoppers are the most useful tool to bring. This disease is debilitating and hard to get rid of. More Info on how to protect yourself while thrashing around the woods of Stark Mountain. \nThe following tools are not allowed: All power tools such as chain saws\, and swinging tools such as hatchets or axes. \nOutfitting for Rain Events: \n\nOuter layer – The primary function is to hold in heat\, as well as keep water out for as long as possible.\n\nGoretex shell or other rainwear\nWaterproof pant shell – old ski pants work well\nWaterproof gaiters (Goretex)\nWaterproof boots beforehand\nBrimmed synthetic hat and fleece hat\nIf the weather is warm\, then staying warm is not a problem. Fast-drying shorts\, gaiters\, and a rain shell may be sufficient.\n\n\nInner layers – No cotton – must keep one warm when wet.\n\nWool or synthetic shirt and long underwear\nFleece\nWool socks\nThin windbreaker underneath the shell to hold even more heat in\n\n\nOther Tips\n\nPut dry (synthetic) clothing in a garbage bag\nBring a second synthetic inner layer shirt (in the garbage bag) to change into at lunch\nPut first aid kit in a waterproof bag\nA thermos of hot tea or soup. Caffeine constricts capillaries and should be avoided\nBring backup gloves. Cold hands will not warm up in wet gloves

Twin Fin started by playing in living rooms and backyards around the island of O’ahu and quickly graduated to playing sold out venues of more than 750 people. Their music is described as catchy surf rock with a healthy sprinkle of country and reggae. After their first tour in 2025\, Twin Fin signed with Feel Good Media\, a Los Angeles- based management agency. This year they are planning on touring more on the mainland and bringing their music to the lower 48 and recording new songs.

Every Saturday there is live entertainment. Visitors are welcome to bring their pets on leash. \nOur market is proud to offer many food benefit options for our community\, learn more about them below! \n3 Squares VT / SNAP \nThe Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible\, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities. In fact\, SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) works with key stakeholders in every state to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits. \nFarm to Family\nFarm to Family is a program funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These coupons are in denominations of $6.00 and helps individuals buy fresh fruits and vegetables\, locally grown from Vermont farms and at Farmers Markets. Look for vendors at our Market with the Farm to Family Program sign to accept your coupons. \nCrop Cash\nCrop Cash is a double-value coupon program that promotes the purchase of fresh fruits\, vegetables\, and herbs at farmers markets that accept 3SquaresVT/SNAP benefits. In essence\, Crop Cash is an incentive dollar that is earned for 3SquaresVT/SNAP purchases for use on the future purchase of fresh fruits\, vegetables\, herbs\, seeds\, and starts at the market. Coupons are marked specifically to each Market and available year round. NOFA-VT manages this program.
