This is the first that Variations in Blue has been shown. \nArthur Schaller\nCollage series Variations in Blue\nThoughts on collage:\nFor decades I have been working in paper collage\, specifically\nwith four-color process printed matter\, ripped\, torn or surgically\nremoved from popular publications (though the source of the\nactual surfaces is unimportant.) This process is a means of\nexploring architectural/pictorial space as well as placing objects\nand forms in space. The representation itself resists alteration by\ndrawing\, painting or digital manipulation\, relying instead on\nassembling rich color and textural surfaces with multiple light\nsources found both in the printed material itself and in constructed\nlight\, shade and shadow. Much of the collage work is in a series\nformat where a concept and compositional format is established\nsetting in motion an ordered framework for theme and variational\nimprovisation.
