SUMMARY:Unplowed Realities
DESCRIPTION:Unplowed Realities examines farms\, land\, and animals as interconnected systems of survival\, care\, and resilience at a time when small farmers face mounting economic and environmental pressures. \nThrough portraiture\, Joan O’Neal explores the animal gaze\, positioning the dairy cow as a subject rather than a resource. Her portraits invite us to consider empathy\, labor\, vulnerability\, and our relationships with other species. \nGeorge Shenk\, community activist\, experimental farmer\, writer\, and creative\, explores the human labor of sustaining small farms and the vital connections between land\, food\, animals\, and community. \nTogether\, their work asks us to reconsider how we value land\, labor\, food\, and life and reminds us that ecological health and community well-being are deeply connected.

The road wasn’t constructed using the high-tech survey methods available today; instead\, the bed was laid out following the natural contours of the terrain. With an average pitch of roughly 10 percent over the last 2½ miles\, the climb is steeper (if shorter) than most climbs in the Tour de France. But steepness alone isn’t everything. The numerous changes in pitch and direction are really what make the App Gap climb a challenging and exhilarating ride\, both physically and mentally. \nWho Can Participate?\nCyclists and Unicyclists of all ages and abilities with any type of bicycle are invited to tackle the challenge of racing to the top of the Appalachian Gap. In keeping with the spirit of its namesake\, the late Allen Clark\, the Hill Climb is a celebration of cycling as a sport for people of all ages and physical abilities\, with any type of bicycle. Clark was a Mad River Valley cycling enthusiast and a regular bike-shop customer who didn’t take up the sport until he was in his sixties. He went on to log between 2\,000 and 3\,500 miles a year\, well into his 70s\, riding in all weather and in every month of the year. His favorite bike was a Bianchi hybrid\, fully rigged with racks and a huge storage trunk. The bike weighed more than 40 pounds — more than twice the weight of a typical racing bike. \nThe Ap Gap climb was one of Clark’s favorite rides\, as it is for almost every cyclist in the Mad River Valley. The climb can be difficult and even downright painful\, but getting to the top is always extraordinarily rewarding. Regardless of what level rider you might be\, riding the Gap is the ultimate fitness reality check. That’s why local riders come back to the Gap again and again\, in a kind of love/hate relationship. \nCategories\nPrizes will be awarded for both men and women\, 15 years and over. Junior riders\, under age 15\, will finish at Mad River Glen. \n\nUnder 15\n15-19\n20+\n40+\n50+\n60+\n70+\nAdaptive\nTandem\nUnicyclists\n\nVolunteers\nThe Allen Clark Hill Climb relies on volunteers to make this event happen. Please consider offering a few hours of your time to ensure the race happens. Here are the needs – contact info@madrivervalley.com or call (802) 496-3409 if you are interested in helping out. \n\n3 volunteers from 8am to 10am for registration and parking management. \n1 volunteer 9:30am to 11am to take extra clothing to the start.\n1 volunteer from 10am to 12pm to help timer at the top of the gap.

SUMMARY:Red Cross Blood Drive at Cabot Creamery
DESCRIPTION:Schedule a Time to Give Today!\n\nIn addition to a bar of fabulous Cabot Creamery cheese the Red Cross is offering donors a $20 Amazon Gift Card by email for giving blood in August.   \nThe American Red Cross has an urgent need for donors and is counting on people to act now and book a time to give blood or platelets. Donors of all blood types and those giving platelets are needed to keep a strong supply of lifesaving blood products on hospital shelves into the summer. \nAs summer heat ramps up\, so do people’s plans\, which could lead to postponed appointments or less opportunities to give ─ an especially troubling scenario at a time where the Red Cross has experienced an alarming drop in scheduled donations in recent weeks. In addition to many end-of-school year activities\, travel and school breaks\, June 1 marked the beginning of Atlantic hurricane season ─ a reminder that severe weather can also quickly disrupt the ability to donate in affected areas and potentially delay or cancel blood drives. \nPower Red: A Power Red donation collects the red cells but returns most of the plasma and platelets to the donor. These donors must meet specific eligibility requirements and have type A Neg\, B Neg\, or O blood. \n\n\nBlood: The most common type of donation\, during which approximately a pint of ‘whole blood’ is given. This type of blood donation usually takes about an hour.\n\nLearn More About Different Types of Donations
