Collage series Variations in Blue
Thoughts on collage:
For decades I have been working in paper collage, specifically
with four-color process printed matter, ripped, torn or surgically
removed from popular publications (though the source of the
actual surfaces is unimportant.) This process is a means of
exploring architectural/pictorial space as well as placing objects
and forms in space. The representation itself resists alteration by
drawing, painting or digital manipulation, relying instead on
assembling rich color and textural surfaces with multiple light
sources found both in the printed material itself and in constructed
light, shade and shadow. Much of the collage work is in a series
format where a concept and compositional format is established
setting in motion an ordered framework for theme and variational
improvisation. Currently twenty-two such series, spanning from
1990 to the present, have been completed with approximately
four hundred collages.
This exhibition features ten pieces that explore the color blue and
its potential in creating atmospheric spatial settings. This series is
part of a larger group of seventy pieces in sets of ten, each
focusing on a specific color: black, white, red, green, pink, yellow
and blue. This is the first that Variations in Blue has been shown.
