For nearly two decades, glowing stars have become an unmistakable part of the Mad River Valley landscape—symbols of celebration, remembrance, and community spirit.
A Spark of Inspiration
The story begins in 2013, during the Valley’s annual Festival of Lights. Local businesses were encouraged to decorate for the holiday season, and a young chiropractor, Corin Bauer, wanted to add something special to the Fuller House in Waitsfield Village. Inspired by her childhood memories of her mother’s glowing star hung in their Fayston home, Bauer created a simple star from saplings.
The idea spread quickly. Neighbors and fellow business owners—joined in, gathering branches, teaching each other how to assemble the stars, and lining Bridge Street with twinkling displays. Sugarbush employees even showed up in droves to help. That year, the Valley shone brighter than ever, with stars of every size and shape glowing from barns, porches, and businesses.
A Symbol of Love & Remembrance
By 2015, the stars had become a beloved tradition, drawing attention from local media and inspiring creativity across the Valley. But in October 2016, their meaning deepened profoundly.
A devastating crash took the lives of five local teens, beloved children of neighbors and friends. In the days that followed, stars were lit everywhere—sometimes in sets of five, sometimes glowing long before the holiday season—as a quiet but powerful tribute. The five-pointed star became a symbol of mourning, love, and resilience.
From that moment on, the stars were no longer just holiday decorations. They became a community emblem, shining light through grief and reminding us of the strength and unity of the Mad River Valley.
From Tradition to Legacy
Today, the Mad River Valley Chamber of Commerce carries forward this tradition through its Star Kit initiative, offering pre-made stars and build-your-own kits. Proceeds support the foundations created in honor of the five teens, ensuring that their legacy continues to inspire light and hope.
Each kit includes everything you need to make a 3’ or 6’ star—pre-drilled wooden sticks, hardware, lights, and even a wicked cool MRV sticker. With a few simple steps (see our easy [instructional video]), you’ll have a star to brighten your home or business and connect you to a Valley-wide tradition.
